RT @dznz: I've recently become obsessed by GLOBUG. I think they've been complicit in a terrible cruelty from the public for years. A thread.

3d 1:50k Topographics

March 31, 2017 in 3D Printing, 3D, Programming

I've always loved maps; and still enjoy dabbling in programming and 3d modelling software in my spare time. What better then to make my own little 3d maps of the interesting and varied topography of New Zealand; starting with the places I've experienced and loved the most in my past few years working with the Kākāpō on remote predator-free islands. After a few prototypes, I wrote a little script that does most of the work for me when a data file is fed in to enable mass production of many different places. I've since added many other islands and mountains to the collection.

New Zealand is very fortunate to have freely-available high quality topographic data from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), from which the source data came.

These are available to purchase in my Shapeways shop.
